The Shadow's Beginning
People often ask how someone with a healthcare background ended up writing mafia romance.
The honest answer is—I never planned to become an author.
Long before I published my first novel, I was studying pharmacy, preparing for board exams, and trying to build a career in healthcare. Today, I'm continuing that journey as a nursing student while also working as a substitute teacher. My days are filled with classrooms, clinicals, textbooks, and helping others. Writing was never part of the plan.
Then one stressful evening while studying for my pharmacy board exam, I realized I couldn't focus anymore. I didn't feel like reading another novel, but I wanted somewhere for my imagination to go. So I opened Wattpad and started writing a story called Andrea D'Angelo Mafia Man #1.
That story eventually became Empire of Shadows.
I still have those original chapters from 2021, and looking back at them always reminds me how unexpectedly this journey began.
Crafting the Empire
I've always loved romance, but mafia romance has held a special place on my bookshelf for years. I've read hundreds of stories in the genre, fascinated by the loyalty, powerful families, impossible choices, and unforgettable characters.
Eventually I wondered, What if I created a world of my own?
Although my professional life has always centered around healthcare, my imagination has always wandered somewhere completely different. I even gave one of my characters a healthcare background because it felt like bringing a small piece of my own world into theirs.
The Black Empire Series was never meant to be dark or gruesome. It's contemporary mafia romance built around family, loyalty, love, hope, and emotional connections. Sometimes readers want something exciting without being overwhelmingly dark, and that's exactly the kind of story I wanted to write.
Every novel expands the world a little further, introducing new families while keeping familiar faces close by.
The Road Ahead
What started as a single story has grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined.
The Black Empire Series begins with the Italian D'Angelo, Bernardi, and Moretti families, but the world continues to grow. Future books will introduce Russian families, American families, and many more interconnected stories, each adding another piece to the larger House of Sandlin universe.
My dream isn't to chase a million-dollar publishing deal or become an overnight bestseller.
My greatest hope is much simpler.
I hope someone finishes one of my books, smiles, and immediately reaches for the next one.
If readers choose to return to this world again and again—to reconnect with familiar families while discovering new ones—then I'll know I've achieved exactly what I set out to do.
