The Story Behind Empire of Shadows

People are often surprised when they learn that I have a healthcare background. Most assume I would spend my free time writing medical dramas or stories set in hospitals. Instead, I have a confession to make, I have been completely obsessed with mafia romance novels for years. I've read hundreds of them, and they have always been my favorite escape. While I was studying healthcare and learning about anatomy, patient care, and medicine, another part of my imagination was quietly building powerful families, secret empires, unforgettable romances, and morally gray heroes. Looking back, it's actually funny how those two worlds ended up colliding.

The funny part is that I never planned on becoming an author.

The story actually began because I couldn't concentrate on studying for one of my pharmacy board exams. I was incredibly stressed, and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't focus. Normally, I would escape into a good book, but this time even reading wasn't helping. Instead, I had this overwhelming urge to create something of my own.

So I opened Wattpad.

In 2021, I started writing a story called Andrea: D'Angelo Mafia Man #1. That was the original title of what would eventually become Empire of Shadows. I had no outline, no publishing plan, and certainly no idea that one day it would become the beginning of an entire series. I simply started typing whatever came to mind, one chapter after another. Believe it or not, I still have that original Wattpad draft today. Looking back at it makes me smile because it's a reminder of where everything began.

As the story grew, so did my love for writing. What started as a way to take a break from exam stress slowly became a hobby, then a passion, and eventually something I couldn't imagine giving up. Chapter by chapter, revision by revision, Andrea and Caterina's story evolved into the novel readers know today as Empire of Shadows.

One question I get asked is why there are doctors and healthcare professionals in a mafia romance. The answer is actually simple: I wrote what I know. My healthcare background naturally found its way into the story. The hospitals, medical settings, and healthcare characters are inspired by experiences and knowledge I've gained over the years. It allowed me to create those parts of the world with authenticity while still keeping the romance and suspense at the center of the story.

Another thing I always like to mention is that while I absolutely love mafia romance, I don't write dark romance. Empire of Shadows is a contemporary mafia romance with heart. Yes, there are powerful families, danger, secrets, and high-stakes moments, but the focus is always on love, loyalty, family, and emotional connections. After reading so many darker mafia romances over the years, I found myself wanting stories that still captured the excitement of that world without being relentlessly grim. Sometimes you need a little light after reading something dark, and that's the feeling I wanted this series to leave with readers.

I still laugh when I think about it. I spent years learning medicine, yet somehow my mind kept wandering toward fictional mafia families. Instead of memorizing medications, I was secretly imagining family dinners that turned into negotiations, impossible romances, and generations of powerful families whose stories were all connected. Thankfully, writing gave those ideas a home.

For me, Empire of Shadows was never just about one couple. It was about creating an interconnected world that readers could keep returning to. The D'Angelo family was only the beginning. Every new book introduces another couple, another family, and another piece of the Black Empire. Watching that world grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

It's amazing to think that everything started with one stressed pharmacy student who couldn't concentrate on an exam and decided to open Wattpad instead. Today, I'm preparing to finish Book Three and already looking ahead to Book Four, and I'm incredibly grateful that readers have chosen to come along for the journey.
